Its all a bit hit and miss because lake eyre is fed by rivers from up Queensland way and it all depends on the amount of rainfall they get up there that then runs down to the lake.
It last filled up in 2004 from memory around June-July time but it lasted only for a matter of weeks and i remember seeing photos in the paper of some kayakers stranded in a bog cause one day there was water but next day there wasn't
Lake Eyre could fill up twice in five years but then it mightn't fill up for another 20 years. Most of the time it just a dry salt pan out in the middle of nowhere.

The lake will probably not fill this year but it will get water in it as there is water running into Cooper Creek right now. There is probably not enough runoff to fill the lake.

The best time of year is when there is water in the lake and that doesn't happen every year but it could be any time from now on. It only hangs around for a few months. Listen to news reports and go when it sounds good.

I used to go to South Bass Island (aka Put-in-Bay_ in early september.

This is almost the end of their season and it's relatively cool, but yet warm enough to break a sweat.

If you visit the islands, Kelly Island is mostly residential so don't go there. South Bass Rocks!
