I am like you. I am lousy at socialising and making conversations. I usually listen, nod my head in agreement and put in a word or two that's about all. The gift of the gap is just that, a gift which not everyone is born with. You might want to pick someone you know whom you want to emulate and think to yourself what would they say.

Start up a conversation on a work related topic and then ask a few more personal questions to get to know your co-workers. You could ask about good places to eat or shop near the office and then invite someone to accompany you to lunch or ask to join a group that is headed out for lunch or a drink after work.

Take a deep breath, be part of conversations. Don't start one if you are shy. Slowly it will get better.
