Agree with melmal ... it's "laugh out loud"
I used to use "lol" only, but then I subconsciously used "lolz". Ppl usually repeat some letter if they wanna emphasize it, like "I wanna dieeeeeee" , so personally, "lolzzzzz" looks better than "lollllllllll" or "looooool", so now it's become my habit to put "z" after lol. Maybe somehow it is related to the "plural" idea after all ....
One more thing, when I still used the old "lol" , a friend told me not to use it cuz it made him think of something else (I think is "lots of love"), so I kinda use lolz then ...

lol means "laugh out loud" it is used to indicate to people online that you are laughing behind your computer screen and lolz is the plural form of lol i guess, although that makes no sense.
