You look RIGHT then LEFT then RIGHT again! This is done because the traffic on your LEFT takes longer to get to you. Think about it...you are on the side.....you have the distance to go across the road. The traffic to your RIGHT would hit you if you stepped onto the road right now. The traffic to your LEFT would NOT hit you because it is in the next lane over! You check to see where the traffic closest to you is......and keep an eye on the traffic least likely to hit you as you cross to the centre or straight over.

" Look right - look left - look right again! "

With British roads, the greatest danger for pedestrians is that of being struck by kerbside traffic approaching from the right. Looking left first can instil a false sense of safety and lead one to begin crossing immediately, with disastrous consequences. Always look to the right first, and once more to check!

It was "look right, look left, look right again", at least in Britain. The reason it's more important to look right is that we drive on the left, so the lane of traffic coming from the right is the first one we cross.

There's no point trying to cross until the nearer lane is empty - so don't bother looking left until it's clear right, but before leaving the pavement it's most important to check the lane you're stepping into is empty!

Wait till you have kids, then your head will be on a swivel, constantly looking in both directions, to avoid the mad drivers knocking over your children - even at pedestrian crossings, which some people seem to enjoy disregarding.

because if you looked right again you would have to look left again and you would never get over the damned road

Cars will approach you quicker from the left, and they are on your side. Anything on the right would have already gone by. Except pedestrians, but they won't hurt you anyway ;)
Doesn't anyone look UP anymore?
