My friends boyfriend says he does it to get more pain relief from it. Doesn't this ruin the whole idea of being time released? Wouldn't it be dangerous?

Never chew a time-released pill! You are subjecting yourself to potential for serious overdose!! You cannot be sure how much will be absorbed from one use to the next! If you are not getting pain relief from the proper use of any medicine you should talk to your Dr. there are many excellent options on the market. Oxycontin is a highly abused drug, and as a prehospital health care provider I see overdoses from just such an act, some do not recover from the mistake! Warn your boyfriend that he is behaving foolishly and remind him that you don't want to find him unconscious or even dead. HONEST!

Yes it will ruin the time release aspect of the Oxycontin, but I can tell you from past experience that they don't last anywhere near the duration that doctors claim. It could be dangerous, but in your boyfriend's case it most likely isn't. I used to have to do the same thing. After awhile, his body has built up a tolerance to the Oxycontin, this means it takes a stronger and stronger dose for him to feel the same effects. So him chewing the pill, will give him more pain relief. The bad side of this, is that it is only going to keep going up, and after awhile chewing them will not work, because his tolerance has grown to high. Then he will have to move to a stronger med, and eventually it will get to the point, where he will not be able to get anything stronger.

OMG Never chew a time released pill!! He's subjecting himself to an overdose! It is very dangerous...have him stop immediately!!
If broken, crushed, or chewed, the tablets quickly release a potentially fatal overdose of oxycodone. Abusing OxyContin by chewing the tablets, snorting crushed tablets, or dissolving and injecting their contents can slow down or stop breathing and lead to death. Injecting OxyContin can also kill the tissue around the injection site and trigger heart and lung problems.

Oxycontin is a very addictive drug. If he gets addicted to it he will have to go on a methadone program to get off it. Chewing on it makes it work straight away and yes it ruins the whole time release idea. He doesn't get more relief from it he just gets faster relief. Yes it is dangerous because the more you take the more your body gets used to it so then it's not as effective and you take more and before you know it your addicted! I hope this helps.

It has a protective coating on it we call ënteric coating". This is there for the purpose of slowing down the absorption of the drug, and taken as directed, without chewing it, will be most affective for pain killing properties.
Yes it is dangerous, and yes, it changes the blood levels that SWALLOWING as opposed to chewing the tablet is supposed to be at.
Tell him, to swallow it when directed with water.

I would think it would be a quicker effect and would be used for the sole purpose of abusing drugs.

Your body will absorb more of the drug if you stick it up your bum instead of swallowing it.
