It depends.

Sometimes i go with someone who has been there before - and i let that person surprise me :D

Otherwise the internet is a nice way of research.
A book i only pick up at the library - as things change rapidly, so a book can be outdated quickly.

I do both. I get the Lonely Planet of the country or city I am visiting.
