I will give you a list of strategies that will work providing you do not have a sleeping disorder, such as sleep apnea, which would require a sleep study to determine. If you sleep with someone, do they say you stop breathing, get up gasping for air, etc., if so that is an example of a sleep disorder that will require a sleep study.

Go to sleep the same time each day and get up the same time each day no matter the quantity or quality of sleep. Limit bedtime to 8-9 hours. Never, ever take naps. It will be rough the first week, but remember, it will take time to adapt to the new routine.

Avoid or limit caffeine (no caffeinated soda, coffee/even decaf, chocolate), nicotine, and alcohol within 4-6 hours of going to bed.

If taking any medications, see if any side effects cause insomnia.

Save the bed for sleeping and sex only...no TV, etc.

Exercise daily at least 4 hours before bedtime (even a 20 minute walk will do the trick).

Relax in the evenings…don’t do anything stimulating.

Try to avoid a bedtime snack.

Take a daily vitamin.

Drink plenty of water (real, plain water).

Try using white noise. I’m a very light sleeper, so I turn on a loud air purifier; this drowns out noises like barking dogs, car doors slamming, etc.

Darken the bedroom. I use black construction paper on the windows.

I cannot stand them but you might even consider wearing a sleeping mask.

I also sleep a lot better a cool room that requires me to snuggle down under the blankets.

The key is getting into a rhythm and reducing stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine.

Good luck and may you be counting sheep soon, lol

I have always used soothing music when insomnia strikes.
I love soft classical, instrumental music.

I also used music to help my children sleep from birth.

I recently came across a method called Deep Sleep 101. It's used at Four Seasons Hotels.

I don't sell the product nor do I make anything for recommending it.

I recommend the use of calming music along with warm milk.

Dear Maryssa,

There are alot of reasons why you may be losing sleep. Given the information you provided, I'm going to have to try and think of several things, and you can sift out what applies to you. And if we hit the nail on the head, then you might just be in for a good night's sleep!

First of all, stress can be a factor. Do you have alot of stress at school, work, or at home? If so, then you'll need to address those issues. A good way to lower that stress is to engage in physical activities like sports, working out, running, walking, etc. When you have excess energy and stress, it's going to affect your ability to get sleep. If this doesn't apply, then let's move on.

Physical reasons: Sometimes the body does not produce enough melotonin. When this happens, you're not going to get good, quality, recuperative rest. There are suppliments you can get in the GNC, Puritans Pride, Vitamin World, and such stores that can help your body produce melotonin, and that will naturally help you get back to sleep. Prescriptions like AmbienCR, Lunesta, etc....just give you an "artificial sleep". It's not naturally produced as if your body was doing it. So you must be careful when you use any prescription sleep medications. Usually doctors only prescribe them short term, because people can really become dependent on them, and it really doesn't get to the root of your problem.

Caffiene/Sugar - Do you drink alot of soda with high caffiene contents? Mt. Dew is notorious for high caffiene content. Many soft drinks are high in caffiene. Do you eat alot of chocolate? Chocolate has high caffiene content, as well as sugar. If you're filling up on chocolate, this could be a problem as well. Coffee? Tea? More caffiene.

Sleeping patterns- Do you tend to sleep ( when you do sleep ) late in the morning and stay up late at night? If so, you could have thrown off your normal sleeping patterns. Sometimes this happens when people work night shifts. Your internal clock is all messed up, you don't really know when it's daytime or nighttime. Human beings are not raccoons, we're not nocturnal creatures. So we need to be up in the daytime, and sleep at night. If your sleep patterns are messed up, that can be the culprit.

Check out the above mentioned items. If something applies to you, then we might have you on the road to recovery. If not, then I recommend you going to your family doctor and having a discussion with him/her. He/She might recommend a sleep study to see what exactly the problem is. And they usually help you.

Best wishes.....and Good night!
