They believe it purifies them of evil alien radiation. No, I am not making this up. Enough niacin will cause skin flushing, and they claim this is caused by radiation leaving the body.

There is a book that fully covers the use of Niacin during a
body detoxification program that Hubbard developed to handle the long term effects of drugs both physical and mental.
This book is called " Clear Body , Clear Mind"
This program is also part of the successful Narconon Program
that uses Hubbard's technology for drug and alcohol addiction rehab.
Since we live in a drug oriented society many new Scientologist's do this Detox (called Purification Pgm) before they address anything else spiritually. The Niacin is flanked by an eact combination of other vitamins and the increase in done gradiently combined with sauna. It is all medically supervised.
It is an exact procedure ,takes about 3 weeks to complete on average. After that most Scientologists no longer use niacin in large doses though the might take aa small amount occasionally.

I don't know, but from experience, high doses of niacin over a prolonged period can screw up your liver. I was on 1000 mg. of niacin a day to lower my cholesterol and then I read in the Merck Manual about it, I informed my doctor and he researched it and found out I was right. So if they are, they better be getting their liver function checked.

By the way, it did get my cholesterol down to normal.

Some believe that it detoxifies the body by allowing the release of fat (and toxins) into the blood stream - but large doses of niacin have been shown to BLOCK the release of fat from fat cells, so it seems that it may actually have the OPPOSITE effect.
