Mr. Nobel, the same one the peace prize is named after, invented TNT. It's basic use was for clearing areas for roads and railways and for strip and deep mining. The use of TNT for those purposes saves years of manual digging. Obviously this invention also had military applications.

First of all - Alfred Nobel invented dynamite not TNT.
Now TNT and dynamite were both invented for the same reasons - the desire for an explosive that was more stable and thus safer to handle and store.

Ironically, the inventor of TNT was Nobel, for which the Nobel Peace Prize is named. TNT is also used in construction of dams, roads, bridges, etc. It has positive uses, but of course, as cruel as mankind can get, it also is used to produce military weapons. The largest nuclear atmospheric blast consisted of 100 million tons of TNT, just to put things into perspective.
