Give this a try use copper coils in this configuration...Coil former of 10 cm diameter coil. Photo taken before fine adjusting of turns between the the glue strips. 1=good, 2=not so good. Why a constant space between the turns? Because of a lower internal capacitance of the coil (result is a greater frequency range). The rest of the detail can be found here:

I'm assuming that you are setting up a long band radio, if not, take a look at this instead:

This gives you great detail, including pictures, of how to set up a parallel plate capacitor for a lab demo only.

what is a plate capacitor? two electrically charged plates seperated by a non-conductive surface between them. a simple one can be made using two sheets of a conductive material seperated by paper or saran wrap thats all a capacitor is. simple to describe, making one is a bit more difficult.
try rolling an aluminum sheet seperated by a peice of paper and a sheet of a different metal such as copper attaching a wire to each piece of metal without letting the two pieces of metal to touch anywhere. just cut the sheets of metal smaller than the paper. the paper should be extremely thin for it to work properly. the biggest problem is getting the capacitor to work in a circuit. the capacitor size has to be calculated for a given rating in farads.

Any conductive sheet material will do; aluminum foil is popular because it is easy to work with and inexpensive. For a dielectric, some sort of sheet plastic will do: either flexible stuff such as Saran wrap, or rigid plastic sheet such as acrylic, polycarbonate, or polystyrene. A sheef of any of these, covered on both sides by foil, will do nicely.
