why do people pretend to be what they are not?

Question

I have noticed this many a times.Sometimes even i pretend to be someone whom i am not!!Sometimes we people follow some norms set by the society without even knowing the reason why!!!
for eg: The distance between the rails of the track is still 143.5 cm and why is it so..because romans did it that way!!!and why romans did so...bacause those measurements were ralated to their horse carriage!!!

why are we like this?

Because they either do not know who they really are, or they know, but are insecure with who they really are. It's about acceptance, I think. People want to feel accepted and like they fit in.
I've always thought it interesting that while we may strive to be our unique selves, at the same time, we need to know that we fit into some kind of mainstream "norm," also.

Most of the times it is because of the norms of the society. If you are not a religious person and you are taken to a temple what will you do? Situations of every place do not allow us to be what we are. I hope you must be getting what I wanted to convey.

We pretend because for the society. Though we try to fulfill our wishes, it may be against society and to get respect from the society, we pretend from ourselves. We wanna feel like accepted in the society.
But we should live for ourselves not for others, we should not bother about others. We should prove what we are .

People pretend to be who they aren´t ,because many humans are impressed by the irregular.Some do it intentionally some automatic,due to their upbringing and their surroundings during adolescence. Your example is too far out !

We as humans like to see things as we want them to be and not the way they really are. This makes our mind conditioned to think that we are what we think we are and act accordingly, this is different from what we actually are, hence we pretend, but we can't help it. 2. to conform to the social code. We may do certain things not because we like them but because the society likes them. it is true incase of our dress, decorum, speech, mannerism, etc.
3. compelling traditions because we are social beings.

we pretend to do so because our life has limited time and if we lose our precious time to find out the reason why we do this or that then we can never discover something new.
