Earthworms eat rotten leaves, thus fallen on the ground, old fruit, plants that are breaking down on the surface into the ground
Earthworms live in the ground just below the surface of the earth.
you can dig in rich soil in a garden and find earthworms.
**Earthworms are benificial because they breakdown and eat rotting/old decaying leaves and such and excret rich soil!!

That is why Gardners love them!!
