Why do the women have to wear those opressive brukas while the men don't have to do anything out of the oridinary? Sounds very unfair and sexist to me, especially in a Middle Eastern nation where it's really hot.

Babygirl,
Women in Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc. are abolsolutely required to wear burkas or headscarves or whatever they're called. No, the women could not organize prostest, they would be beaten, jailed, or possibly killed.

"A graphic example of fanatical oppressive Muslim dress codes occurred in March 2002 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. A fire occurred in a school there in which 15 young girls were killed in a fire. During the fire in the school the girls had shed their oppressively hot all-concealing outer garments. Actually preferring the death of these young girls to the transgression of Islamic Law, Saudi Arabian Religious Police (the muttawa) actually battled against police and firemen who where trying to open the doors to free them."

This is a good question. I saw on TV today that a prominent Muslim Immam in the UK said in his sermon that any woman who refuses to wear one should be beaten. (It was secretly taped)This causes me to ask another question. How in the world could any woman in her right mind be a Muslim? Anyway, back to your question. If they don't obey they face beatings and who knows what else. Very sad situation for them! They don't seem to have any choice.

Well most of them do not know any better. The biggest ally and weapon of religion has always been ignorance. You are brought up that way. Do not forget that christian women were considered unclean by the church and it was a sin (still is) to attend church while menstruating. You are also the root of all evil that has befallen humanity. You had 0 rights. At least Muslim women could inherit property and own land. As to the heat factor, well it might look to you as if they should get hot but they do not. The dress code has been developed to assist the inhabitants of this areas and not to hinder them. It actually keeps the ladies cool. In the desert the Bedouins are covered in layers of black camel wool That actually insulates them from the intense heat of the day and the intense cold of the night. Been there done that. Spent 17 years in the middle east.

It really depends on which Muslim country you are talking about. In most Muslim countries women don't wear Burkas at all. In fact in Turkey most women don't even cover their heads.

In general the veil, or the covering of the body, is meant as a protection of women against men. It's a way of showing (as a woman) that you are decent. It does put the burden of men's behavior on women. Personally I do think that's unfair. But it's not that different from the West. If a woman were to go near naked on the streets we also expect her to get raped and a man who does, will be punished less. So the difference is one of degree - it's not absolute.

I feel women and men should be free to wear what they want.

One more thing:
In the Middle East not only is it hot, but the sun is also very damaging to the skin. So for those of us that genetically did not come from that area - all except people with very dark skin - people need to wear clothing that covers a lot, because their skin needs to be protected. Looking at pictures, you will see people covered all over their body: men and women.

During very hot sunny days environment departments issues warning to citizens to cover thier body from sunshine to protect from UV'S etc's. So covering body in hot days is not unhealthy but a vise choice and decision against any thing which can harm human body.

Now in Islam woman and man both has instructions to cover their bodies, but both have little deferance and that is according to there physical nature and requirement.

people who has no brain and wisdom can not understand logic and wisdom behind these religious instructions.

Since Humanity learnd to cover there bodies man and woman both are covering their bodies. People living out of civilizations were unaware or probabily forgot how to cover themselves.
Covering themselves was and still is a sign of civilized and mature custom.

If we see in past history all mothers , wives, sisters, daughter's of Prophets and Messangers used to wear decent cloths covering their bodies properly.

Islam is not new religion. Islam is the religion of all Holy Prophets and Messengers. Islam teaches us to follow Prophets and follow there tradition and practices.

Still Nuns of Christian Churches wear almost same dressings as Muslim woman

We have to learn good things not to just follow what media is trying to show or trying to spread , Nudity, Velgurness.

In this earth there are deferent type of people wondering arround and if there are tow women or girls are walking on street. One Girl is wearing sober dressing and covered properly, other girl ha very short cloths on her body what do you think bad eyes of bad people will react on which girl first????

Think and try to realize first and learn more about religion.
All Prophet taught same religion. Think, Think, Think!!!!!!

Well to your disappointment "Slave of 12 Gods", we do give honest answers. Muslim women do not need to wear the burga'a. In Islam, it is not mandatory. They have the freedom to put it on or leave it. Therefore, you have no right to call it opressive because it is out of personal desire not Islamic obligation. I really wish you'd stop concluding that something is racist and unfair until you have asked the people experiencing it. You will surprisingly find totally different answers.

They don't have to, my dear. they CHOOSE to.

It's a personal choice. If the middle eastern women had a problem with their "oppresive burkas" , they would have protested a long time ago for their rights. But they CHOOSE not to.
