Ken, I am religious, but I will not stand here and say that you are wrong in being an atheist. The reason that many people become rude when you state that you are an atheist, is because they are bigots. Yes, I said bigots. I believe that everyone has the personal right to believe what they want to believe or not. Now I will not sit here and say that I believe that what you believe is wrong, and I can tell you that I believe you are wrong, but I cannot FORCE you to change in any way. Christians especially are supposed to be different than the rest of the world, but not in a rude way. If Christ walked around telling people off that didn't believe in him, this world would be a much different place! Maybe you heard a few years ago of the infamous acronym, W.W.J.D.? What Would Jesus Do? In this case, Jesus would show compassion, and understanding. Most likely he would point out that you are wrong, but in no way would he begin to shout, holler, call names, or strike you down for what you believed. Like I said, "Yes, I do believe that you are wrong in your beliefs" but then again, I have no right to force you to believe what I believe.

Do you really care what others think of you? Besides that, these people are just looking for an argument and are hoping you take the bait. Just another reason to push their ideals on other people. I am actually a Christian myself, but I do not see the need to try to argue with others over their religious choices or lack thereof. I'm pretty sure the last thing anyone wants is a religious/non-religious person trying to convert them from one belief to another simply because of a disagreement regarding personal choice.

According to their belief system, you are already destined to burn in hell for eternity. Since you will not be joining them in their "next life", your feelings or opinions do not matter in this one.
This is a common problem worldwide, and the fault has to be placed with the religious leaders that have, over the past couple of millennium, perverted Christianity from a religion of caring and humble service to absolute intolerance for opposing viewpoints.
Ghandi said it best. "I like your Christ, but I do like like your Christians".
Personally, I consider the source and ignore them for the most part.
I am much more comfortable in placing my belief systems on facts, instead of a book written when all thought the Earth was the center of the universe and that the Earth was flat. Not to mention that it has been edited and translated so many times that it it useless.
One of the great things about America is our freedom to look foolish, and the majority of religious leaders ensure that their followers practice this freedom daily.

because most of the ones you talk to are religous from birth and have never questioned anything. They don't even know that much about their own religion (try asking a christian about a verse one after or before the verse the preacher talked about in his sermon and they won't know where its from) and they're terrified of being asked something they have to admit they don't know.
Those of us who have studied our religion and are comfortable with it don't feel threatened by other people's decision to ask hard questions. We admit we don't have all the answers and that there may be questions to which only God will ever have the answers. But whatever you believe or don't believe in is your personal business and not my place to criticize

Because the ones that have responded to you are extremists and narrowminded.
I am religious but think everything should be in moderation and we should be overwhelmed and ignorant because we believe in something.
Some people thinks its "their way or the highway". I feel sorry for them and I do pity them for not accepting diversity and other people's opinions.

Fear.
Fear that one day they will be called to face their Maker, and they will be called upon to account for all the ones they have left behind.
They believe it is their duty to bring you into the light, and by leaving you behind, they are failing their duty to their Maker.
They mean to approach you in Love,
they simply need more practice.

All that say they are, aren't.
The ones who are, can only pray for you.
I just did.
Amen
