whenever i dwnload fr the net it sends dwnloads t desktop and when i attempt to open downloads i get no action

when i download from the net it downloads to the desktop and when i attempt to download from desktop it opens up 'applications' and i try to open them from 'apps' and get no results. why? i am using a I-Mac
