My cats have a wierd thing they do. At first it was only my oldest cat. She puts her little mice toys in the water. Mostly at night, but sometimes during the day. Within the last few months though, my younger cat has started doing it too. The toys aren't dirty, I've even washed them to be sure. Its not really a problem, but something really wierd I've never had cats do. I don't think she learned it anywhere else since I've had her since she was really done. Any real thoughts on what causes this?

I'm adding this as a comment to one of the answers. They leave the toys there until i remove them. Also I've bought new toys! Even fresh out of the package, those little buggers run them to the water bowl. Its really so wierd....

One of my cats does all kinds of strange things with her toys. She puts them in her food bowl, she puts them in her water bowl. She fetches. She brings her toys to the bedroom door and lines them up at night when we're sleeping.
I asked the vet about it. He said she's very bright. Not to mention beautiful. okay, now i'm just bragging. Seriously though, he said she's probably extremely bright, and it's a security measure. She knows those things are hers, and she likes to keep her things close to her. He said it's common behavior for dogs, not so common for cats.

This is truly odd behavior. But, there could be a good reason (at least in the cat world) for it. You didn't say if she puts them in the water and just leaves them there, like forever & ever, until you take them out--or, if she goes back and retrieves them. I CAN tell you what she is doing. Your younger cat has upon occassion gotten ahold of your older cats favorite "baby". She is trying to get the other cats scent off of it. Cats only like the toys that have their own scent on them. So, I'd just trash these 2 mice (or whatever they are) and get a couple of new ones of totally different color, and give one to each. They will know which one is theirs. Hopes this helps. Just as a note, when my cat was younger, things he didn't like, he'd carry to and deposit in the litter box--lol

That is sooo funny. The older cat obviously thinks dunking her toy mice in water is a fun game. The younger one learnt from the older cat (my 1 yr old cat learns all sorts of things from my 9 yr old). Maybe you older cat is teaching the younger cat how to drown mice hee hee hee

whilst they could unlike catnip, they could like the scent of your cleansing soap even much less. whilst cat toys are designed to tolerate a cat chewing on them, they actually are not rather well worth the money to maintain them in case you sense you may wash them (are you beneficial you may, in spite of the undeniable fact that? it variety of feels ordinary which you may "disinfect" your room...) - it incredibly is better to purchase clean toys that have not have been given chop up seams or a soapy scent from you washing them.

just a cat thing. they all think differently. one of my cats has an obsession with pushing things off the desk and leaving them lie. the other has the obsession of taking baths/showers with mom and not caring whether or not he gets wet... its just an attitude thing.
