I pay 3.9% of the value of my home, but the percentage really depends on the school district, county, whether you're in a MUD district, etc. It can fluctuate quite a bit depending on where in Texas your property is located.

TX property taxes are some of the highest in the country. TX does not have an income tax. They have to bring in tax revenue somehow so they rely heavily on sales and property taxes.

To give you an example, I owned a home in San Antonio until recently. It was valued just over $100,000. I also own one in Joplin, MO. It is valued at about $160,000.

The real estate tax bite on the TX property was just under $2,800 last year. The real estate tax bite on the MO property was just under $900.00. So in this example, the TX real estate tax is more than 5 times higher than MO.

TX sales taxes are also among the highest in the country.
