A permanent resident is based on the status of an immigrants visa. It basically means that you are allowed to legally live in the US until it expires. I am not sure if it is the same for everyone but my husband is a permanent resident and his visa expires two years from the day he received it. He is required to renew his visa 90 days before it expires so that he may continue to live here. You may only continue to live here as long as you renew your card and after a specific amount of time and earnings you will be qualified to apply for citizenship status. We were told that this usually takes four years. But not in all cases.

You are not usually allowed to leave the country unless you get permission to do so. If you leave without permission then you will be denied reentry. Until you have become a naturalized citizen you belong to your home country. But this really is a shady area for immigrants because if they fully intend to become citizens then they are pledging allegiance to the US. And also in some countries whenever you are a dual national or have lived in another country after a certain time period, you could lose your citizenship.

I know about that because I lived abroad for a few years and was told that if I didn't register to vote or keep my information in check with the US embassy, I could eventually lose my citizenship. I have moved back since then but it is possible for those who continue living abroad!
