Here's a recipe for making plain yogurt at home...its not hard and once you get the hang of it... you won't want to buy it from the store.
Take about a big tbsp or 2 worth of yogurt (you need a starter culture) in the container you want to make the yogurt in. (I have used, ceramic, steel, tupperware, etc-- doesn't really matter what kind of container.)
Boil milk ( say about 800ml to a liter)-- let the milk cool. I sometimes put it in a sinkful of cold water so its a little bit lukewarm. The milk shouldn't be too hot or it won't work out. Once you have kept it in the sink for two or three minutes--you can dip your pinkie finger in it....if its bearable then its the right temp.
Pour it in the container with the yogurt, you can mix it a little if you want. I usually do this at night, and put it in a warm place, like a slightly pre-warmed oven (most of the times i don't even warm the oven--especially not in the summer..).
Now, the next morning, or say in about 3-4 hours, it will be tempting, but don't open your container right away, just refrigerate it for an hour or two at aleast-- and you will have the perfect yogurt ready :)
Its not really a hassle once you get used to it, and you will work out the optimal times and temperatures by your second or third time--- also the hotter the temperature while and after the yogurt is set-- the more sour it will be. Depends on what your recipe calls for.

Mix 1 quart of milk and 3 tablespoons of plain yogurt. Set an electric heating pad at medium temperature and place in the bottom of a cardboard box with a lid. (A large shoebox works well.) Fill small plastic containers with the milk-yogurt mixture; put on the lids. Wrap a heating pad around the containers, then cover with towels to fill the box and let sit, undisturbed, for 5 to 6 hours.

Easiyo has a fantastic web site with recipes.
I have a Easiyo yogurt maker, I paid for about $20 (Aussie) and buy the starter mix from the supermarket, in many different flavours.
