Never tell him straight that you like him. Invite him to go with you to shop or to the cafe. Ask him to help you with little things, ask him some favors, etc. etc. I mean, make him feel you do look forward to him and believe he is are very helpful. Give him some cute gifts and cards never miss an opportunity to do so [like Valentine, Birthday]. Introduce him to your friends, relatives. Make him feel a bit important to you that way. All these should work out I hope.

Right now i think is the wrong time to ask him out on a date. Because of just breaking up, you don't want to be on his rebound, he might take it out on you..(cheating all girls are bad trip, you know what i mean).Maybe send him a smiley face on a note card and say how about some coffee after class..Get back into the hanging out thing again and work slowly into it.. If he doesn't get the hint honey change directions..

The best thing to do is try and make your relationship closer. spend more time send him cute random text messages and hang out a little more. try not to be stalkerish just approach him in a way that lets him know you are there for him to get through the break-up then when u think he is just about over this chick make your move cause you wouldnt want another lady to make it before you. make sure that all the while your helping him through his ordeal you are dropping small hints of your crush on him...

You actually may not want to clue him into the fact that you like him right now. He is hurting over what his ex just did to him, and he is not going to get over it quickly. He needs some time to heal up before he is ready for another relationship. At least ready for a relationship that is not going to be a rebound. I would really pursue a friendship with him and take things from there. You don't have to act like you aren't interested, but I would express it directly yet.

Oh my....!!.. Cmon..everyone knows how to flirt... instead of just saying hi and just walking away.. stop and talk alittle longer.. try accidently bumping into him more than once.. the best thing is to maybe ask him whwether he wants to hang out..it doesnt have to be a date or anything... Hmm..Good luck..Hope everything turns out well..;)

Next time you see him just be really friendly and nice to him and tell him if he needs to talk then you will be there for him, be his friend first and if that goes well then pursue other options.
