I'm very sorry to hear about your cat. I know it is hard enough to lose a pet but if something happens in your absence it hits you even harder.
Yes, it is common for cats to have Urinary Tract Infections but they will run a fever and do not die from it necessarily unless it was a very severe infection or some other complication. Most cats, if they are not feeling well, will discontinue grooming themselves, may stop eating and will cry alot if they are in pain. Sorry to say this but I would be suspicious that it was because of some neglect. I mean, if your cat seemed to be doing well and you were only gone for two weeks. Was your cat confined to the indoors? Is your neighbor really responsible enough to not have forgotten to feed and give your cat water, etc?
I wonder if your neighbor is telling you everything. Have a talk with your vet, maybe he/she can ease your anxiety.

Yes male cats can in fact get UTIs. Things to observe are if the cat isn't using his litter box *if he is an indoor cat* or if he is peeing on things outside the litter box. That's peeing and not actually spraying, which is a totally different behavior. If the cat is spraying he will back up to something and the urine will more or less spray out and you can notice hes marking things, as opposed to him just squatting and peeing on things. When my cat had one, he would keep peeing in our laundry basket full of clothes and any clothes that were left on the floor. It was annoying, but extremely important to have your cat looked at if you suspect anything because its very dangerous. Hope this helps!

Sometimes vets can't even read the signs. I was worried about my cat Beauty as he was painfully thin despite the fact that I was feeding - and he was eating - constantly. I took him to the vet who said his heart and lungs were strong, his bones were strong and everything was fine but he did question whether I was feeding him enough. He died a month later.

Male cats when they are older need a special diet, and you should consult with the vet about the food your feeding.
Male cats are prone to problems with there urinary system and getting blockages.there are some foods that are better to help prevent this, and they need a low ash diet
Sorry about your loss.

my advice is do not feed your cat any food that you can buy in a grocery store (Iams, Eukanuba, Meow Mix, ect..as it is CRAP). go to a pet store and get some GOOD food (Nutro, Royal Canin, Techni-cal, ect..). I cant remember if it is too high or too low that is bad but something to do with the ash content causes thier urine to crystalize. I remember a few cats in my life that had to be euthanized because of this. And it is common in male cats.
