Don't ever be rude to Your guests. Just attach a simple,
"Please R.S.V.P. for the purposes of organizing the catering. Thanking You in advance.________________".
That should solve all Your problems. It works for Me.

You can put it politely, you can put it bluntly or you could put it in the funny papers and some people still won't respond. Don't get mad, just get your phone book out and call the slackers.
P.S. Usually the non-respondents are not coming. It's hard to call someone to refuse an invitation...it makes you feel bad.

You put "Please RSVP (by such-and-such date, if you need a date)."
It is common etiquette knowledge that an RSVP is required in this instance. There's not much more you can say. If you are sending out invitations to moronic cretins who have no social graces, you'd best take that into account when ordering the food. Good luck.

RSVP is Responde Sil Vous Plait means Reply if you please.
In other words please reply.
This is the most polite way of expressing your need for the invitee to reply.
You may make the RSVP more catchy and noticable.
You may also enclose a numbered postcard with stamp that just has to be posted by the invitee, with a catch phrase at the head eg. "We will ever glow in the pleasure of your company".

The polite thing is to put RSVP, but people still don't do it and then show up. One way to prevent this is to put location or time given upon RSVP. So people don't get the location unless they call. This way no unexpected people.

R.S.V.P. (mandatory) If they don't understand what mandatory is they are probably not smart enough to come to your daughter's party.
