tenia, with the "acento", is the past tense singular form of verb "tener", which is "to have"

the complete conjugation for "tener" is:

yo tenia - I had
tu tenias - you had
el/ella tenia - he/she had
nosotros teniamos - we had
ustedes tenian - you had (plural form)
ellos/ellas tenian - they had

For verb "to be" in past tense, it is a little bit more complicated, since a curiosity of Spanish language is that we have to verbs for English verb "to be": "ser" and "estar"

For example, if you mean: "He was at the supermarket", then, you must say "El estaba en el supermercado". But if you want to say: "He was a good person", then you must say "El era una buena persona". Usually "ser" is used for condition, and "estar" for location.

Conjugation for "ser" and "estar" in past tense:

yo era / estaba - I was
tu eras / estabas - You were
El/Ella era / estaba - he/she was
Nosotros eramos / estabamos - We were
Ustedes eran / estaban - You were
Ellos/ellas eran/estaban - They were
