The word “salvation” is the Greek word soetare which means to restore, make whole, make it like it was before. The English word “indemnify” is used in finance and insurance because it means to make it like it was before. This is the closest English word to the Greek idea of soetare.
So, are you exactly like Christ? Are you exactly like Adam was before the fall? If you are, you can say you are saved. Otherwise, what Christians mean when asking this “wrong question” is “Are you redeemed”, meaning; “Have you laid hold upon the heavenly gift and applied Christ’s sacrifice to take away your sins?”
To be "redeemed", you must "beleive". Believe meant something different then than it means today. The Greek word for believe is the verb form of the noun "faith". Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. In other words, if you really hold something to be true, you'll live your life according to that truth.
Rom 10:9-13
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

God is holy. We are bound by chains of sin in the slave market of sin, separated from God by our sin. Jesus paid the price to redeem us from the slave market of sin. We are saved when we believe that he paid the penalty for our own sin on the cross. The bible says that if you believe that he is the son of God and that he is risen from the grave you will be saved, and you will show evidence of your belief in your life, holiness, and be a witness to others of his saving power. Being baptized is an answer of a good conscience toward God. He commanded we be baptized and those who love him obey his commandments. It's a symbolic act.
