the us is divided into four time zones, eastern central, mountain and pacific. the central time zone if iremember correctly is gmt-6 but i'm not really sure. it has a large number of major cities within it such as dallas, chicago. st louis, indianapolis. much of it is prairie land filled with family and commercial farms. it's main purpose for the creation of the time zones in the us were to allow the railroads to not have to constantly adjust their time schedules for the many different towns they went through. towns in the northern area would be different than further south when using the position of the sun as high noon in each local. this, of course, could create headaches just trying to figure out when noon was noon in one place as compareds to another place 100 miles away. it may vary a few minutes, but calculating schedules using multiple times for just short distances became a mathemeticians nightmare. setting the four zones madee scheduling systematic and prevented nearby towns having different times. the rr's could now set pre-defined schedules which were standardized and easily understood by anyone.
