sounds like an infection caused by something caught around the crown(you should have one with root canal) or the gumline..
gargle with warm salt water to help fight infection and you may need some antibiotics if it doesn't get better within a few days, take advil(ibuprofen) for the pain

If it is not a different tooth and you have a crown on it. the tooth may have cracked see the dentist use some tooth ache paste before that. on one tooth I had a root canal but never went back in to get the crown done so the temp filling came out after awhile... good luck with that

When a root canal is done the roots are not removed. The nerve tissue inside the tooth is removed. The roots still sit in the bone surrounded by ligaments which are still very much alive. So it is possible to have pain but not hot or cold sensitivity.

YOU poor thing! i have had root canals, and had to have one redone, cuz it had an extra root!! go figure!!
It's been over 12 years, and i swear that tooth still aches!!!
I even had the wisdom tooth next to it pulled, cuz i thought it was referred pain, or phantom pain!!
Okay, you have red swollen gums?
possible infection.
ambsal is the way to go for temp relief,
eventually you have to see a dentist, call around, you will be surprised that so many dentist have so many different prices!!!
Ask yourself, do i want to keep this tooth???
How long ago was root canal? they have to cover it for 3-4 yrs.
*and if the dentist missed a root, which he should have seen on x-ray, his neglect.
YOU could have cracked the root. Just cuz we have root canals, doesn't end the tooth decay or root rot!
Like i said eventually you will have to go to the dentist.
decide if you want to keep/save this tooth
or have it extracted for 100-200$-- cheap compared to more crowns, etc.
It could be the tooth next to it that is causing the pain.
Red gums could mean infection, the longer you put it off the worse it's gonna get, and the more it'll cost.
Best to go to a dental college, see if they can work on your tooth with instructor supervision, **this is an ecconomical way to go!!!
**or open yellow pages and start calling and getting price range quotes for an office visit.
My home remedy is to go to spice rack, get cloves, take whole cloves run under warm water, chew on them, and tuck it into the pocket of the check and gum of tooth bothering me. it's a natural number.
Also my dentist told me to put vaseline on the surface of my teeth and that way when they make contact they won't be sensitive.
Good luck.
Try a Dental College.
See if any Dentist take payment plans.
I'm so sorry.
My family teasing my mom who never drank a drop in her life for our rotten teeth and say it's cuz she did drugs and drank when she was preggers with us, robbing us of calcium for healthy teeth.
it's just a family joke, and she knows it's not ture. We love her.
God rest her soul.
Heal thy tooth, get a dentist with a generous payment plan
Dental College
Call around different dentist don't charge the same.
always could go to mexico or canada!!

For temporary relief of the pain..take an aspirin -yes ,this does works -- and put the aspirin right on the area that is hurting and let it dissolve...if one aspirin doesn't do it..take one more and do the same........my old aunt told me this years ago and I didn't see how holding an aspirin on the area would do anything but leave a bad taste in my mouth..but at that point I probably would have tried anything.....so I did..and was really surprised how well it worked..it bought me some time to get the money to go to the dentist.........

The absolute best way I have found is to use the Anbesol Extra strength liquid. I think that is the name, surely you know what I am referring to.
The key to it is to use a syringe, you can go to your pharmacy and they will give you one if you tell them what it is for. It will not have a needle in it. You do not want the needle.
Then load the syringe with the liquid and shoot it directly onto the area that hurts. GONE!
Do not try rubbing it on the tooth, it does no good. Get a syringe and shoot the liquid directly on.
Good luck!

I HAVE YOUR ANSWER....
Was once in your exact same spot. Go to the store and buy a $1.50 bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide.
Take a swig, hold it in your mouth and swish it around for 5 minutes or so, THREE OR FOUR TIMES A DAY. In a few days (AT MOST), the pain will be completely gone--for good.

Brushing the teeth will help. I don;t know why, but this works. Also try pinching the web of the hand that the tooth hurts on. You know, between thumb and forefinger. I know my ideas sound crazy, but they work.
