got a beep with message that said: Windows System Error - There is a duplicate name on the network. I checked User Accounts in Control Panel and guest is off and I am the one and only user, as Administrator.

do you have more than one computer in your house? Are they networked? Maybe the other computer has the same name as yours. (If using Windows XP, right click My Computer and look at the computer name tab. If the name is the same on more than one computer, you'll need to change one.)

If you use a cable/DSL connection, do you have a router/firewall for your internet connection? If not, you need to get one (for a lot of reasons).

Hello there. I'm assuming you are on a network. Basically, this error means that the computer you are on has it's own unique name, by the administrator. As with people who have their own unique name, computers must as well have their unique names, so the network can differentiate who's who. Try this...

1) Click on START, and choose Run...
2) enter "command.com" and press OK
3) enter this command, "net /view" (for WinXP it's .. net view)
4) This will list all of the "computer names" on the network, scan the list to see if there's a duplicate name that is the same as yours, if so you have to change your computer's name
5) To do this (you need to have administrator powers or approval before doing this)...
6) Click START button, select CONTROL PANEL
7) In Control Panel, double-click Network, and then click the Identification tab
8) Type in the new name and click OK
9) You will need to reboot your computer and your error should be gone.

NOTE: I am doing this from memory, so I may be off a bit in my directions but it should be close enough.

Hope this helps :-)

Are you on a local area network? If not, you system seems to think that you are and that you are logged on for a second time.

If you are not on a network, and your user accounts are as you state, then you may have spyware.

Get and use BOTH of the following free programs:

Adaware SE
SPYBOT S&D

Both are highly respected programs and should find any spyware or adware you have.
