Want to know why men hear what they want to hear at times, I know that men are different than women, but why such a barrier when listening when just a small piece of information is given?

As they say, "Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus".

Have you noticed (in answers to your question) all the anger women have unfairly directed towards men? Can a guy get fair treatment today from female chauvinistic pigs? Makes you wonder who really starts Domestic Violence...

Woman's language consists of excess words (according to most men.) Yes women are intelligent and say intelligent things. But our worlds are so ALIEN to each other that women
don't care about us (football, etc) and we don't care that Mary down the block wore her red sweater today, the one made by her grandmother but was missing a button and oh gosh, didn't she look funny?

I think with both sides of my brain. While I might jump from subject to subject very fast, many women tend to do it MUCH more than me.
Like an essay with sentences that run into each other (and make no logical sense to the paragraph before it) women talk like they are meandering down a country trail, then get hiccups and abruptly change the subject.

"Hey did you see those blueberries? By the way Martha was wearing her blueberry skirt.
Did you see the latest King Kong movie. Oh my daughter was so cute in her pink dress.
Do you think the President is right?"

This is an exaggeration, meant to fit into many paragraghs. No I am not smarter, I just communicate differently and many times (bet you can't tell here!) I use less words. Lol... :)

Finally the answer: because caveman learned he had to look at the tiger that was at the cave's entrance. He could not take his hand off the bow and arrow no matter what. That is man's concentration.

The problem is compounded when or if both sexes do not respect the other ("oh he's dumb or she's never says anything.") Today women are brainwashed to believe they are superior.
It's easier for them to denigrate men than to look or treat us as humans.

Deborah Tannen did some interesting research about this issue, and came up with some surprising information about the ways men and women communicate. "You Just Don't Understand!" is the name of her book. Essentially, she discovered that our brains are literally wired differently and this is manifest in our communication skills.

Women seek to build rapport and thereby play down their expertise rather than display it. This often puts women in the position of being the "audience." Men value the position of center stage and the feeling of knowing more, and they seek opportunities to gather and disseminate factual information. This puts men in the position of being the "lecturer." And all of this impacts listening skills and the ways in which men and women listen and take in information from one another.

The book is highly recommended. Tannen wrote a couple of books about gender differences in communication - it's great stuff.

Men have what is known as "selective hearing" They tune out most of the time, and occasionally open their ears to listen about 3 minutes ouf of every 24 hours. Goodluck on when that is. Talk fast.

I know that with me, if the conversation is even slightly interesting to me, I'll continue to listen. But, after about 15 seconds of boring stuff, my mind starts to completely wonder and I only pretend to listen by nodding my head continuesly or saying "yeah" or "ok." It's the same with movies/tv shows for me, when it starts to get boring (and I was expecting something better), I turn it off or walk out. Examples: Heros, Superman Returns, and Batman (that new one, I forgot what it's called).

Men hear what they want to to hear at times because women say what they want to at all times. Your man was just waiting for you to get to the point. You tricked him by going straight to the point first.

Men hear, they rarely listen. They just don't comprehend things that are said because they don't want to. Unless it directly affects their sex life or their cash, it's usually just white noise to them.
