Borderline Personality Disorder-

You should help point out to the person that they are capable. It is common in Borderline for the client to seek rescuing from a multitude of self generated crises. It is important to point out to her that she is capable of solving these problems.

Borderline comes from a developmental arrest during the seperation-individuation stage of development (0-3). The child does not form a sense of herself and capabilities in order to progress.

She will act in many ways like a toddler... wanting to be away, yet terrified of abandonment. This is where this comes from. She will actively seek a rescuing "parent" to help her out of her dilemmas. She did not learn at this stage that sheis capable and now is as good as time as any for her to learn. Teach her best with patience and tolerance as you would a 2 yr old. Show her she is not only capable of solving problems on her own, but in making her own decisions in other areas.

Sometimes a borderline will seek hospital admission to gratify the wish to be taken care of. It is best to not allow this to occur as much as possible. Recovery for a borderline involves developing a true "sense of self" and building upon this as a foundation.

I'm guessing here, but you're not a therapist are you? If you want to know how a therapist works, go to school and study. That way the odds are that you'll learn what you need to know, and be able
to avoid asking other people who know nothing about treating emotional or mental disorders on the web.
