Yup. And I've done the research before but dammit, now I have to document it. Sigh.
OK, here is a link. http://undergraduatestudies.ucdavis.edu/explorations/2004/clark.pdf
43 studies that link atheism to high iq. It "logically" follows that in places like "the bible belt" that have high religiosocity, would have lower IQs - but a study that measures IQ to region specifically, hasn't been done that I can find.

Kind of, but it has nothing to do with the Bible, per se.
The reason the people in Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, etc are not as bright as the rest of the country is because they are the genetic descendants of those who were too stupid and/or lazy to get out of Dodge when the Great Depression Dust Bowl wrecked the region.
Any blacks that still live there today, 150 years after the end of slavery are masochistic lazy fat-asses that have no motivation whatsoever. Their cousins who moved west/north had all the smarts. The only ones that stayed with ingenuity are the crooked politicians like Ray Naggin.
The Whites who stayed have the same problem. Too torpid to get off their asses and seek a better life in California or Florida or elsewhere. Instead, they just stayed put for the path of least resistance to suffer the sweltering heat, cold winters, and devastating hurricanes.
Takes a pretty low IQ to do something that retarded... and probably a faith that God will make your life better once you reach the gates at St Peter.
Besides, most of the genetic mutants from the people that stayed who are themselves smart ended up leaving the south to go to universities in other parts of the Country. If it weren't for our lame electoral college system that gives the unpopulous states that comprise the Bible Belt so much power over the budget and elections, then they wouldn't have so many subsidies to build public-works projects that has slowly lured smart people back to select regions (ie, Manhattan project, UTexas, Georgia Tech, etc.)

This is a ranking of the state's education
Alabama-45th in the nation
Georgia-41st
Kentucky-31st
Mississippi-48th
Tennessee-30th
Virginia-6th (surprisingly)
North Carolina-23
South Carolina-26
Arkansas-32nd
Texas-25th
Oklahoma-36th
Louisiana-44th
Missiouri-22nd
This doesn't neccesarily show IQ, per se, but it does indicate that the states in the bible belt tend to have a lower quality of education (with the exception being Virginia).

Well I know there's been quite a bit of research that shows a negative correlation between intelligence and religious belief. I haven't heard of any studies specifically relating to the American bible belt though.

Religion encourages people to accept information on faith, without thinking about it or challenging it in any way. This flows out from the religious beliefs to influence the rest of the person's mind, causing them to accept all the information they're given without question. This, in turn, leads to lower test scores because they can only regurgitate the information, not analyse it critically.

the forefront of genius sure tends to make me think so but the size of the ignorant is no evidence of worth (ie); the world was thought to be flat by everyone of that time period and the same font of Christian Belief murdered and incarcerated many a pioneer in astronomy and related science because they did not
submit to the fantasies of the church at that time . most of us learn from history as to not repeat the same mistakes over and over again.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

No, from my past encounters I have found that SoCal by far has the dumbest people on earth. Try talking to anyone on the street they are bound to be a lame brain. Just take paris hilton for example.

I don't know about a lower IQ, but rural areas generally offer less educational opportunities.
And there's inbreeding.
So, there you go.
