Last night my Shih Tzu was acting lazy (5 months old) which is not normal. Didn't think anything of it. Gave him a bath. This morning @ 10-10:30 started doing the top knot and his eye is red, swollen, and a cloudy bluish color. I called my vet right away and he had me go pick up Tobramycin Opthalmic Solution USP, 0.3% and Rimadyl Cap/Chew 25mg. His eye looks like it has an ulcer. Will these meds clear it up and how fast? If you leave an email address I can send a picture of how it looked around noon. I don't want him to go blind. PLEASE HELP WITH ADVICE.

I don't think you are being irresponsible. You are a concerned parent who wants to get all the advice you can. I seriously doubt people are going to steer you wrong on purpose. I have a vet book that I can look up the symptoms in if you wish and tell you what that says then you will have more knowledge and questions you can ask your vet about.

If you have an urgent medical question, you need to directly contact a vet, not ask the question to a bunch of strangers on a non-medical website who can claim to be anyone from a vet to the king of Siam. This is irresponsible. Call an emergency vet and discuss the situation with them. If these are just general questions as to how the medication will work, call your vet in the morning with a list of your questions.

Anyone diagnosing your dog's condition without being able to perform an exam is being irresponsible and could be misdiagnosing a potentially serious problem.

I have eight cats, and I'll tell you that you need to get her to a vet NOW. Antibiotic ointment may poison her because she will want to try to lick it. In the meantime, wrap her in a towel so that she can't claw you and try applying a combination of heat compresses for 5 minutes and then cold compresses (which she'll hate) every 4 hours or so. She should like the heat compresses. Wrapping her up in the towel will also keep her paws close to her so that you can clean her up with warm water and probably keep her from biting if she bites. That said, I'll repeat myself: Get her to a vet, ASAP if you love her. It also wouldn't hurt to get her spayed. Matter of fact, that probably would be the best thing you can do for her. If you can't afford to have that done by the vet, the Humane Society should have someone available to do it cheaply, or find a no-kill cat rescue organization who can give you a certificate for spaying (if you can show financial stress).

Sorry Shih Tsu's, Lhasa Apso's and most of the bug eyed breeds are susceptible to eye ulcers due to the BUG EYES, sorry to give the truth I had a S/S for 12 years and 3 of her pups got the problem within 2-3 yrs of age (I kept in contact with the buyers) My mothers S/S and L/A also got the ulcers but late in their lives 10-13 yrs old we have had some friends who had pugs and they tooo have had the same problems because of their Eyes.

If it is an ulcer, than that medication should be ok, but I wonder why your vet didn't ask to see you before prescribing medications, it could be several different things. That would have been the best thing to do. How is he suppose to monitor how well its healing if he never saw it in the beginning? Ulcers can take varying times to heal, the most important thing to do is keep him from causing more damage to the eye by rubbing it. If you notice him doing that, get an e-collar (lamp shade looking thing).

First of all, thank you for being concerned about the well being of your pet.
Second, I think it was wrong of your vet to give out medication over the phone. Your dog needs to be examined by a vet, as it could be a much serious matter, that may affect your dog's vision. There are several different combinations of eye ointments, and you could be given it the wrong one.
Have your dog examine in person.
Rymadil???? That's an anti-imflammatory arthritis medication, and it's never prescribe for eye problems.

You didn't take the fur baby in? He could have something under his 2nd eye lid, a split 2nd eyelid that has scratched the cornea and caused an ulser, there are so many thing it could be. And treating b/4 doing and eye stain? you may want to TAKE him to a different vet for a second opinion . Shi/s have so many eye problems due to how the tend to "bulge" It does't take much and they could lose the eye all together if not treated properly

I am not a vet, but one of my chihuahuas gets corneal ulcers a lot. The vet gives me the drops for the chi and it usually clears up in a day or 2.
