I cant even imagine how it gets going

Why do people go? i cant get that idea either. to go shoot people and be shot at over something we dont have forced service anymore

You have something I want, or you're doing something I don't like.

When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, it was a preemptive move on their part. They wanted to bottle us up until their expansion was accomplished.

When Iraq invaded Kuwaite, they were hoping to reaquire land that was once theirs. Hussain thought he'd gotten permission from Bush I, but Bush had his own agendas. He needed to increase America's influence in the area. Lots of wars are large scale chess games.

It totally depends on the war and the time period. Some cultures declared war openly, others just raided, some even had fatal sporting events to settle differances between tribes.

Your question seems more or less to target the USA though, so generally in the past it has happened like this:

Several countries argue over several things and it other countries including the USA are dragged in because of alliances. Course every war is differant and so is every situation.

As far as invading and landing... this is set up my military stratagy, depending on the circumstances. For instance in WWII Normandy invasion, the Germans were caught by suprise for the most part having only about an hour warning time. They believed the invasion (which they knew would be coming) would be launched much further north from Dover.

In a full out war, you follow your commands... and as infantry that usually means "taking" a certain strip of land... thus shooting and killing any enemy that is occupying that strip. If the enemy surrenders, the enemy is to be taken as a live prisoner of war... though of course this is not always the actual occurance.

Why do people go? Generally contracts. People join the military for the pay and benefits, others believe that it is a form of duty or servitude toward their country. Some (though very very few) sadly do go simply to shoot people legally.

Sorry this answer is scattered and such, but it is a vague question and one that thousands of books have been written on.

Oh Boy . There are strategic plans to winning or fighting any war. #1 Find and kill the guy that pissed you off!
eliminate all war heads on the ground at sea and in the air .
The airstrips big and small either made inoperable or take control of . The shipping yards . If you have a Navy that can not dock its useless. Planes that cant take off or land ? Useless. Finally the manufacturing plants. Failure to produce supplies or armament . Useless.
As in the case of Iraq. The world was involved so an embargo was placed on the country. Not trading with a country is very effective.
What keeps wars going are other countries supplying money and weapons to the fighting individuals. Mainly because it benefits them if a certain "Side" wins. All secretly so not to get directly involved.
All these terrorist groups are living off some rich persons money .
Like the IRA Irish republican party . If they are still active?
Probably are!. They do not wake up in the morning deliver the newspaper , make a house payment and buy a gun . Nope ! The high profile ones have to hide out keep moving change identities and cannot hold down a steady job. That costs a lot of money. Matter of fact, The majority of funds came from America or still do .Not the government of course ?????????/OH and 99.9% of all wars past and present are started because of a difference of opinion about RELIGION Yes that almighty being of GOODNESS and PEACE LOVE HAPPINESS . Not to mention the record holder for largest percentage of Human Lives Taken. At one time or overall.

Why do people go?
****************************
Well, most people have joined the military during peacetime in order to get training, educational benefits, health care, career opportunities and a steady paycheck. Then a war is created by the government, and they have to go fight. Often people who enlist are from the poorer segments of society and they don't have much hope for their futures or much money to go to college. The other factor is that most soldiers are fairly young and still vulnerable to being manipulated or inspired by the ideals of patriotism as well as feeling that they are immortal and nothing can hurt them.
