I have a female canary that is about 6 years old and a male zebra finch, 1 year old, who's mate just died. Can I put them in the same cage or would they fight?

I usually don't advise mixing two different types of birds (or any animal). However, take it slow and put the cages near each other so they can get used to one another. The younger one will adapt better than the older one, so keep that in mind. If you decide they are ready, put them both in a cage and WATCH THEM! Make sure they do not fight. I have never know canaries or finches to be aggressive but you never know. Only leave when you are confident they will get along.

I have a pair of canaries (with two new hatchlings) and a pair of zebra finches in a 4 ft cage. The two pairs have been together for over a year now.

If your cage is over 4 feet in size, yes.
