How common is it to have a diagnosis of cancer, but not what type of cancer (histology unknown)? Example: malignant tumor in the abdomen but cancer origin un-identified.

My son has a rare abdominal sarcoma that present as multiple tumors . . no known site of origin, other than the abdominal cavity.
But his cancer is also identified as being small, round, and blue . . the shape of the cells are desmoplastic . . so it is called Desmoplastic small round blue cell tumor.

From talking with his surgeon, basically if a sarcoma is in the abdominal cavity . . and has no clear site of origin . . they are beginning to lump them in as being small round cell tumors. He also said that most of them respond to the same type of treatment.

Do you know if the malignancy is a sarcoma . . also ask if it could be a small round cell tumor . . that way you will know which type of treatment to seek.

Good luck.

It's apparently becoming a more common thing getting diagnosed with cancer...as to the causes and types there are too many to count. Even amongst the ones "known" there are variations; mostly depends upon the individual and how their body takes the treatments given to how successful or not the results will be!! I am a very lucky guy; diagnosed with a rare type (mediastinial germ cell tumor - 21+tumors) and only after 2 extreme years of advanced treatments, can I say "cured"... if that's a sure thing!!!
As for your example...cancer origin!?! So many possibilities could be the origin of cancer that doctors at times can only speculate. Environmental, stress, any of a number of possibilities have to be factored in.....early detection is vital!

Sometimes the origin of a cancer is not know until the autopsy --- This is in no way common but then it's not unheard of either. I shall remember you and/or your friend in my prayers this evening --- God will sort it out!!! Take good care.
