When you are holding them, and they take their last breath, doesn't it seem like something has left them?
What is that?

life has left them. Life is our breath given to us by God, (he breathed life into adam) and blood is also the main form of our lives. This is why we are to eat no fat and no blood, for blood is the giving of life sustainment. The blood and the breath is what animates the flesh.

Yes, three separate times with three cats that I got as kittens. The first one died at 15 years and the last one died at 21 years. It was a very sad and moving experience each time. But my experiences were not like yours. I saw their bodies stop functioning, but I didn't for a moment think that there was some mystical life force that left their bodies.
What you saw & felt confirmed your beliefs. What I saw & felt confirmed my beliefs. Neither of us can conclude that our beliefs are correct because of this.

The life just leaves them in the same manner it does when a person dies. There isn't really a visible change but the change is noticeable nonetheless. All of a sudden, game over, and they are just an empty vessel. Know what I mean?

Yes i have seen my kitten die my brother fell with the couch on the cat and it started convulsing and i held on to the kitten till it died. I hated what happened. I actually seen the life leave her. The actual life in her eyes went from light to dark as if a machine shut down. i miss her and know it wasn't my brother's fault or anyone's. Yes i know the pain.

Yes, several, in fact.
What is it which animates their flesh? The same thing that animates ours - the individual energy that makes them unique creatures of the universe.

you know three weeks ago my husband went to go work in the garden and there was this injured pigeon. he could not fly. my husband tries his best to clean him up while i notified a wildlife place to bring hte pigeon to. my husband got it in the car and came back about 10 minutes later holding it. i cried for about an hour. it is so sad. when i was younger i had a gueina pig die in my arms. in the vets office. i tried to save her but there was nothing that could be done. it is severly depressing.

Yes. And I've been with people too.
Their life has left them. It's very sad. I don't think there is a soul, but I can understand how people would attribute that loss to a "thing" leaving them.

Not in my arms, but once I saw a fly get stuck in a spider web. Then the spider came and it... The fly was buzzing and it sounded all panicked. It was horrible and it happened when I was seven and I still haven't forgotten it.

I held my cat, Cinder, who had cancer, as she was euthanized. I watched as she relaxed in death and it seemed as though her pain was lifted from her small body. I cried as I lost my dear and loyal friend, at the same time knowing it was the right thing to do. A very sad and very moving experience.
