They are then trampled on by the Egyptians and Assyrians and Babylonians and Romans and Christians and Nazis and Arabs. They become the most persecuted people in the entire history of the human race, with endless heartrending stories of exile and suffering and torture and homelessness and slaughter and terrorism and paranoia. Belief in a god in itself is one thing, but if you have an ounce of objectivity and more than three brain cells, can you believe that god ever cared about these people or ever told them the truth? I think it perfectly illustrates the world's enmity with God. His chosen people are the target of the schemes of the evil one and those who fall under his influence. It also shows that God doesn't pick people based on their status or popularity. It tells us that He can and will redeem whosoever will come. What critics of theology and Judaism and Christianity in particular fail to take into account is that we are not in Paradise yet and this world is not ever going to be Heaven as long as fallen people are running it. It doesn't take very much intelligence at all to compare what the Bible says will happen to Israel and what has happened to her. It just takes a little reading and a willingness to accept the truth.

The Jews have lived through seven civilizations. They are here. And when this civilization ends and the next one begins, they will be there as well.
God made a covenant with Israel (Jacob) and all his descendants. Keep the 613 commandments and I will be your God. There is no mention of any nations or people. As long as the Jews keep the 613 commandments, God will be their God.
To keep the contract, Jews of today must teach their children for tomorrow. The 613 commandments separate the Jews from the people surrounding them. And this faithfulness has caused persecution from others.
God never in the covenant guarantee freedom from persecution. All God guarantee that if Israel kept the commandments he world be there God.
With this background, you may asked why God made the covenant? God didn't tell us. You may asked why God allowed the persecutions? Man, not God, persecutes.
If you have a Jewish mother or you have converted to Judaism, you have a deal with God. Keep the commandments and He will be your God.
Frankly, it does not matter what non Jews believe or don't believe. The Jews are here, they have been hear for 3500 years, and unless the world ends today, they will be here tomorrow.

God chose them not for being a powerful nation but for a mission to uphold monotheistic belief in God. There is truth to what you said; they have been trampled upon by large nations that sorrounds them and persecuted almost everywhere they go. Until now they are sorrounded by angry Muslims in every corner of their country and their only way out to escape the onslaught is the sea but have you ever wondered why no one succeed? They are not totally annihilated and they are still rich and strong.
It may be true that US have always stood beside to help them but the distance of US protection is still far compared to the enemies that overlook them from the Syrian and Jordan mountain borders.
You might want to think that the true God is always on the side of the small (like in time of David) so everyone will see the strength of God when He start to prove His choice. No need for an intellectual to understand why. It is your three brain cells that needs a tune up.

The idea was and is to produce spiritual people. The problem, the flaw in people is free will. God doesn't program you to love Him or anyone else. Its your choice. Thats the rub.
The Israelites disobeyed God and they suffered as a result. They refused to do what it took for them to embrace spirituality appropriate for their time. They went into captivity because of it and came out of captivity and pulled some of the same stunts so their city and temple were leveled, people killed, priest hood went the way of the temple and the Arc of the Covenant. It is tragic.
The general idea is that it is good to embrace the next Messenger. It is our responsibility to find Him and understand His Message. Otherwise what good are we. WE end up in a world like this one in captivity to Babylon all over again only world wide. Same boat, bigger ocean. Are you in captivity? You better believe it. Not only that, you better obey your babylonian captors if you know what is good for you.
Its all a part of the Plan to help us embrace the spiritual attributes. Tests bring suffering, tests are good for us but woe betide the bringer of those tests. What man intends for evil God uses for good.
Soon the scorpion will sting itself to death. The world will become a paradise after a time of trouble. The aggressor and oppressor will be gone from the earth. You believers will not have to lift a finger to do harm to any of them. Just stay out of their way if you can and seek the truth as if your hair were on fire.

If you want to build up muscle mass, do you lay on your back all day? Do you pick up a couple 5lbs weights and never move on to 10lbs? Or... do you occasionally push your limits and perservere under adversity?
When God promised the Jews the Eternal Covenant, he never said it was going to be easy for the Jews.
In fact, the relative ease that Christians have enjoyed for most of their history is more proof that they are NOT a chosen people because their 'deity' took away all the work, all the struggle, all the reason to strive to be a better person. They just say sorry and all is forgiven, no sacrifice, no hardship, no adversity.
IF Yahweh is real and is the true God... Jesus was of the adversary, not God.

Yes they were chosen by God,still are. God will not lie. and Jesus was a Jew.and the first apostles were Jewish as well.
Christians know that the Jews will have Jerusalem and their temple and king. We will have Jesus King of kings.
And one day world peace and we all get to go to Israel and it will be an awesome event. Yes the Jews are Chosen...
And God will pick them out of all the nations with all the Christians. The rest will be judged.

Well, I have 4 brain cells at least until my brain surgery on 2/9. God chose the jews to be the messengers through a covenant w/ Abram. They were to be his people/witnesses through whom the world would be blessed. They were refined like gold or silver. Through out the Bible, the message is that God will purify his own people before the others. I'll chastise my own kid before I face down my neighbor's.

Because even though they rebelled against God many, many times, He has always protected them from utter destruction.
