Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, and Cannidae.

There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:

A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.

A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.

A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.

A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.

There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

Any good quality puppy food is fine, some make large breed formulas which are formulated especially for the special needs of larger dogs like German Shepards. Iams and Eukanuba make two of the best foods on the market. I don't know what in the world these people have against it. That is what I feed my dog and always will. Look at the labels on the food and look for one that lists meat as the first ingredient. Avoid anything that lists meal as one of the first three ingredients. You are just feeding your dog dust. Even though the better foods are more expensive, they are worth it. You feed less of an expensive food because the dog uses more of what it eats, consequently the poop is smaller and harder which means it is also easier to pick up. The milk should stop though because dairy is not good for dogs. I don't know what chapatis is.

Chapatis are not good for dogs because of the wheat and oil, he can get bad diarhea. Put him on a puppy food, and be consistent about the brand or it can cause him stomach upset or diarhea if you keep changing it. If you do switch brands once he is established, mix a bit more of the new food in with the old every day over about a week so his system can adjust. He also doesn't need the milk; an egg is okay every few days as it will help his coat shine.

What I am about to list are pricey but some of the BEST brands out there.
Solid Gold
Eagle Pack
Timber Wolf
All very good foods, no meals or bi products. If price is an issue Purina Pro Plan or Purina One
DO NOT let anyone talk you into Iams, Eukanuba, Pedigree, or any other Purina food except those 2 listed above

Milk is not good for dogs.
If you want to feed your dog a ready made dog food I'd suggest one formulated for German Shepherd dogs:

Feed this when the dog is a puppy:

Then this when the dog is 15 mos old:

I like that this brand of food is readily available, a healthy formula and designed with GSD's in mind.

In over 30yrs of breeding & trying various brands along with studying many papers written by nutritionalists I have finally settled on Nutro Ultra puppy food & Nutro Ultra Adult. One of my fems had a skin allergy @ the time I made the switch from Nutro Max. The allergic reactions stopped w/in a wk. Purina, Eukanuba & Iams are not recommended. Feeding milk to a weened pup is not a good thing. Have you noticed loose bm's? If so, the milk is the culprit. Good luck!

dear friend, you can give your puppy anything except hard materials to eat at this stage. as your pup is a german shepherd then you don't need to worry too much as they have a quite good digestion system. just give it food according to the the work it carries out. i have got a doberman, which are almost same as german shepherds in size and i think that you are giving your puppy the right meal.

Agreed about NOT putting your puppy on Iams...absolute worst pet food on the market. I suggest asking your vet for suggestions (that's what I did, and he gave me a list of good foods for my cat). Also, do some research online to make sure you aren't buying food from a company who's economic practices you don't agree with. Congrats on your new puppy!

Alongwith pedigree for puppies you can also feed curd that is more nutritious than milk. Milk is also good enough. My pom puppy eats almost everything except salty or spicy or sugary foods. My pup eats salads i.e. cucumber, carrots, etc. She also likes fruits, curds etc. I also feed her non-veg like chicken, bones etc. But she likes rotis more.....
