We are an english family and when we arrived with my children in the Czech Republic they had to learn czech and now they are fluent .but when we arrived we had no television except Cnn news and a few german chanels . After 3 months they were pretty good and then we changed the tele but i insisted that we change back last summer to only news and german . We had had it for one month before we went camping and we met some germans and particularly my youngest ( 10) played with the little girl and this was the first time she had actually spoken german and the parents were amazed because she was pretty good and was chatting away. All three watch german films and cartoons and understand almiost everything now . So my advise is get rid of your english tele except perhaps a news programe for yourselves but no tempting programs for children and as no one really wants their children to watch it anyway one might as well get something out of it if they do . I absolutely know they will be fluent if you can make the step especially as they are so young.

Get a live in nanny who only speaks Italian. At that young age, they will do best when they hear it always.

Send them to italy for the summer, or go with them, you can never pass up a trip overseas
