my child likes to "beat up" my cat. Is there any way I can help them to get along? My cat comes back for more and sometimes stands his ground. I'm worried about him getting hurt by the cat, what do I do?

You must step in now and intervene! You must teach your child NOT to rough-play with the cat... and yes, your child can get pretty scratched up or worse and the cat can get injured too. Please do not dismiss this child's play as harmless or cute. Truly, you need to teach your child how to behave around animals and you need to discourage your cat from attacking the child. The best way to do this is be around to supervise your child whenever he (or she?) wants to pet the cat. And that's all you should allow your child to do - PET the cat... not to carry, not to play with, not to pull tails, etc. Just pet. Do not leave your a8 month old child alone with the cat. He might pull it by the tail and the cat may lash out with ist claws and really do some injury.

When your child and the cat are in the same room you need to keep a really close eye on them. If your child goes toward the cat then you need to be firm and teach him that he is not allowed. 18 month old children do know the difference between yes and no. Make sure there is an equal punishment when this new rule is not obeyed. And don't waiver. You have to protect him. Unless you want him to possibly grow up with a giant scar across his face. I'm not trying to be snotty - my friend has a scar on her face from her cat growing up. The cat's claw actually went all the way through her cheek. Good luck and take care!!

deffinately teach the kid what is and isn't allowed with the cat. someone on another board let her son blow in their cats face and the cat got sick of it and mauled the little boy. both on the face and back when the child turned away. my own son almost got bit by one of our cats yesterday when he grabbed his tail. my son got punished because he knows better than that.

Teach your kid to learn to respect animals. The child is WAY old enough to learn. If he doesn't stop, then it is time to disapline him.
