Methadone can be very addictive. It is a synthetic opiate mainly used to treat heroin addiction and other opiate addiction. It can be used for pain since it is an opiate but BE CAREFUL. It is very easy to overdose on because the main way that it is taken is in liquid form and it may not look like allot to take but it can kill you very quickly. If you do decide to take it, you should take between 20-30 mg. I recommend 20 mg because 30 mg may be to much for you if you are not a daily user of opiates. You should educate yourself more about opiates before you decide to use them.

Methadone was a pain medication long before it was used to get people off of heroin. It was created in Germany during WWII due to a morphine shortage. Be careful with your dosing as it takes a long time for the body to metabolize (this is why it's used as a sustained relief med and not a breakthrough med) and can build up to toxic levels in your bloodstream easily. Don't increase your dose or double up on your dosing, the specific dose has to be titrated very carefully. Follow your doctors instuctions explicitly and you won't become addicted or have any trouble.

Methadone, the government's substitute for heroin, to my knowledge will not cause health problems. However, it is addicting--this is the dumb part...A heroin addict can be detoxed in a matter of days--when people start taking methadone, some of them need to take it for their entire lives. Good work, govt.

I've never heard of anyone taking it strictly for pain. I do plan on checking it out, though, and will be back if I find anything of that nature.

Looks like it has been used for pain for a very long time.

Yes it is safe to use for pain control as long as it is taken as prescribed. As with any narcotic it can cause health problems if taken in excess. Also there is always the potential for addiction. Hopefully your physician will only prescribe it for only as long as medically necessary.
