First off, congratulations on your new tattoo. The most important thing for caring for your tattoo(s) is to listen to what YOUR artist instructed you. This is important because the artist knows what type of ink he used, and what treatment will work for it. Before you listen to other suggestions bear in mind that you have different skin type, different artist, different ink, even different application methods.
Between my boyfriend and I we have around 10 tattoos, and have seen 4-5 different artists. Some recommend tattoo goo, some recommend Lubriderm non-scented lotion, others even recommended Polysporin (anti-biotic cream) but the most important thing is to follow the care instructions that your artist gave you.
Basic rules are NOT to pick at it. No scratching - it's definitly going to be hell for the next few days while it is scabbing over (this means that it is healing) and if this process takes a long time bear in mind that the artist may have pushed the ink in really deep. If you pick or scratch at your tattoo whole pieces of ink will come off and your tattoo will end up looking spotty - definitely not something you want.
So my advice is to go back to the artist, ask for a care sheet or cleaning/healing instructions OR if they already gave you one - look at it. And please follow the instructions of the artist, not somebody else because everybody receives different instructions.
Good luck!

Ok.....no need to panic Dude it sounds like your tattoo is shedding. A couple or maybe three days after the tatt is done is starts doing what I call shedding. Little pieces of skin come off (Usually black ink from the outlines first.) This is normal.....someone took a bunch of needles and poked them through the top layer of your skin (the ink is below your surface skin) ....so now that skin is dying and shedding off (like a sunburn). So wash your tattoo in the shower a couple of times a day (and pat it dry) keep the tattoo goo on and after a week it should quite shedding and start looking good. Dont put Vaseline on a Tattoo. You can put Vaseline Intense Care Lotion on.....but I would use the goo first and use the Vaseline Lotion after it quites shedding. Use the lotion a couple of time a day for a month or so and the colors will stay really sharp
good luck with your first tattoo

ok their is a few things that the person who did the tattoo should have told you for one you can only put plain lotion on it "the kind that has no smell and no meds in it " and tattoo goo, do not put vaseline on it b/c it will not be able to get air like it needs to dry up! Anouther thing they should have told you was DO NOT pick at it because you can cause scaring in the tattoo and cause the ink to come out of your skin.. then when the tattoo completely heals it will have white dots in it "if you peal the scabs" just leave it alone and let it air out it will itch and you will wont to scratch it but DONT...

Dude you do not want to put vaseline on your tat vaseline does not allow your skin to breath. If the tattoo goo aint working try a+d ointment or any other triple anti biotic

Dont put Vaseline on it!! and dont peel the skin off.... you have to let the tat run its course. It is going to look real rough for a while but you have to be patient. Try not to scratch or peel and in a few weeks everything will be okay

Dont use Vaseline, use Shea's cocoa butter cream it says it used for stretch marks but that is what my tattoo artist always gives me it does wonders. Do not scratch or rub the tat. It will heal quick and then it will look great the rest of your life!

When I got my tattoo my tattoo artist recommended using just plain lubriderm lotion. Don't pick at it!!! Just keep applying the lotion on it and keep it clean. Yes, its going to hurt, but you knew that before you got it! When it heals you will love it.
