When i took Amtrak from SD to LA it was about $25-30 each way.

now do you mean the Local transit agency bus service? or do you mean Amtrak
or do you mean Greyhound?
as Metro (as Metro is called in Los Angeles doesnt
go to San Diego but you *can * take local transit from
LA to San Diego, or you can take the Metrolink to Oceanside
then Coaster to San Diego
your cheapest route would be take local transit,
from Downtown LA, you can take the Blue Line to the transit Terminal, then board OCTA 60 (get a day pass) take that
bus to 7th/Channel then transfer to OCTA #1 (take it to the Greyhound station, or even the last stop and then transfer
to the NCTD breeze bus (your day pass is accepted as a transfer
to the NCTD bus, and then you can take NCTD bus to Oceanside then you can either hop the coaster or board another
NCTD toward San Diego (I believe it will connect to San Diego
Transit at UCSD
