Because they spread the bacteria from one spot to another, and they don't treat the existing boils correctly. A boil should be treated with applications of heat, and left alone to drain spontaneously on it's own. It should not be treated with lotions or potions, or with squeezing, poking or prodding. A boil which doesn't respond to heat within a few days should be evaluated by a doctor, who can lance and drain it in a sterile manner. Otherwise, a boil should be covered with a bandage or dressing to absorb any drainage and prevent cross infection. You should wash the affected area with an antibacterial soap, and take care not to touch the spot and then touch another area of the body unless the hands are washed again. You should certainly not use the same cloth or sponge to wash the rest of the body until it is thoroughly sanitized in hot water and bleach. Wear looser clothing, to prevent rubbing of the skin and to encourage air flow in the areas affected. Get sunlight to the skin as often as possible. Eat a well balanced diet, with a supplement vitamin to ensure you have nutrition needed to maintain and heal skin. If boils are a continual problem, then you should seek the advice and treatment of a doctor. There are some medications which can help, and he can also do a culture to determine what bacteria is causing the problem. It is not due to dirt or poor diet, although being dirty and not eating right certainly don't help the situation. It is just normal bacteria found on the skin getting into a pore or hair follicle, where it doesn't belong. Break the cycle by careful hygenic procedures.

"The Mom" gave you an excellent answer. Boils are usually an infection of staphylococcus aureus and if he is getting them repeatedly, he probably should see his physician and get some antibiotic treatment for the condition. Good hygeine with an antibacterial soap is very important to help keep the staph count lower on the skin and help with prevention of continued outbreaks.
