Tithes are not a Christian requirement, it was Mosaic Law or the law given to the Israelites and not intended for Gentiles or Christians. Tithes were required of the Israelites as they were under Theocratic Rule or ruled by God as a Holy Nation. The tithes were to pay the Levites as their possession was God and they did not receive land as an inheritance like the other tribes of Israel. It also paid for the upkeep of the temple and everything used in their worship of Jehovah God. So any religion requiring you tithe is not following God's word as now God just asks that we give willingly what we can afford as God loves a cheerful giver not giving under compulsion (necessity), 2 Corinthians 9:7

I pay tithes based on what I earned before taxes were ever taken out. I figure it isn't God's fault the government takes out all that stuff anyway.
And yes, the Bible does say to give the first fruit. Not the, "after taxes, insurance, and bills" money.
Then, if the government sees fit to give money back to me, I tithe off that as well. If I won a cash award, if I got an inhertiance, anytime money comes my way, I pay 10%.

You are not supposed to pay a tithe at at all. That is an Old Testament rule which has been cancelled by the cross. It is actually a sin to tithe because you are ignoring Christ and are focusing on "the old laws". If you want to give, go ahead and give, but don't tithe.

Under the Mosaic Law there was no stated penalty to be applied to a person
failing to tithe. Jehovah placed all under a strong moral obligation to provide the tithe; at the end of the three year tithing cycle, they were requiered to confess before him that the tithe had been paid in full.
tihteing consisted of one tenth of the produce of the land and fruit trees and of the increase of the herds and flocks. This was brought to the sanctuary and given to the Levites, since they had no inheritance in the land but was devoted
to the service of the temple.
The Levites in turn gave a tenth of what they received to the Aaronic priesthood
for their support.
At no time were the first century Christians commanded to pay tithes.
The primary purpose of the tithing arrangment under the Law had been to support Israel's temple and priesthood; consequently the obligation to pay tithes would cease when that Mosaic Law covenant ,came to an end as fullfilled, through Christ's death on a torture stake. ( Eph 2:15; Col 2:13,14)
It is true that the Levitical priests continued serving at the temple in Jerusalum
until it was destroyed in 70CE, but Christians from and after 33 .CE. became
part of a new spiritual priesthood that was not supported by tithes.
(Ro 6:14, Heb 7:12; 1Pet 2:9
With the distruction of Jerusalum and of the Holy Temple Jehovah showed that he was no longer with his people and so the old Law had ended and a new one instituted by his son Jesus Christ at the time of his death, he was the last sacrifice to be given to his Father, he was the final Lamb of GOD.
As Christians, they were encouraged to give support to the Christian Ministry
both by their own ministerial activity and by material contributions. Instead
of giving fixed, specified amounts to defray congregational expences, they were to contribute according to what a person has, "giving " as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God love a cheerfulgiver, ( 2 Cor 8:12; 9:7
Paul set a fine example in seeking to avoid bringing an undue financial burden
on the people in the congregation, each one could give to the congregation
as there hearts moved them to.( Gal 6:2-5 ).

The Bible says "first fruits." It is an attitude which Jesus suggested should come AFTER a concern for justice, mercy, and compassion.
We choose to do before taxes.
