Living "south of the line" for all my life, i take pride in my dixie self. I AM SOUTHERN LADY FROM MARYLAND, like it or not, i AM southern. I talk with an accent and im used to braidin' my daughters hair on the porch! I love cookin' fried chicken, maccaroni, and creole favorites! I love showing great hospitality and a great accent. and i Am from the MD. Just because Maryland is very advanced in areas such as baltimore and DC, doesn't make us northern. Im about as southern as a broke back lady from mississippi! haahaha. i also have GREAT humor!
My point is, we're south of the line. GET USED TO IT. i just wanna know...
why do people call us north???

and this includes Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Florida, West Virginia, and Virginia(dc too)

I moved to Gaithersburg, MD after college, and then also lived in Silver Spring, MD for several years.

I learned a little bit about Maryland history that you might find enlightening.

Most Marylanders considered themselves Southerners and there was considerable support for Maryland to secede and join the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Even the lyrics to the state song call Abraham Lincoln a tyrant and refer to the North as "scum":

"The despot's heel is on thy shore,
Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!"

and

"I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!"

(There is STILL considerable debate in the Maryland Legislature about choosing a less offensive and anti-Union state song.)

There's a lot more about Marylanders' sympathies in the Civil War here:

In any case, there's a lot of historical precedent for Maryland to consider itself a Southern state.

But imagine how history would have been different if during the Civil War, the capital of the United States, Washington, DC, had been completely surrounded by Confederate states!

Maryland is neither North nor South. it's right in the middle. i really hate the fact that you're gonna make me look up a map online to find out where Maryland is...You're next to Penn. and Jersey!!!!

of course you're located North. what's so bad about being a Yankee anyways?? what "line" are you talking about? also, what makes b-more and DC advanced?

if you've got Southern values, that's fine and dandy, but you're a Northerner like it or not. you're right after me (I'm in Jersey).

in addition, you are REAL Southern, because for some reason, Southerners still think of the States as Yankees vs. Rebels. i used to hang out in Virginia all the time when i was younger, and i always got that. i didn't care before, as i don't care now, but i still never understood it when i heard it.

you're Northern because Maryland is a North state.

Honey, Maryland is considered a northern state whether you like it or not. It doesn't matter if your from the south or the north but people in the north do braid their daughters' hair on the porch. I'm from the north, Connecticut to be exact, and I grew up on eating fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and my family shows great hospitality too. Not all southern people are hospitable and eat southern food.

I could go on but this just sounds ridiculous. I just wanted my 2 points. :)

Some times it is an uter confusion while people explain the location of their places with reference to direction. At a certain position in the geographical map it looks 40% North East but they say they are at north!!!

I think the Mason-Dixon line is a bit high. I think Virginia is the most northern southern state, personally. Above that, it's not very socially/historically southern.

You didn't even secede.
