I've gone through repeated HIGH fevers that last for days with my son. Usually fever is the first sign of some sickness to come. The thing is, there's not much the ER can do for high fevers that can not be done at home, which is probably why they told you that. As far as the girl who recomended ice cold baths and ice packs...that is not a good idea. Think of the shock of that, your body being 104 degrees and then suddenly freezing, and besides, it's the evaporation that cools bodies, not really the actual water temp. If he refuses to take a bath, wipe his head down with a damp cloth, dress him lightly and keep his socks off. You can piggy back tylenol and motrin, for example, if you give motrin at 8am you could give tylenol at 12:00 then motrin at 3:00 the tylenol at 4:30 or five. I've tried the whole drugged juice thing with the same results, you really do have to force him to take it. The thing I've always been told is that it's really important that when the fever is down, the child perks up. He also NEEDS to keep drinking. If his head hurts and none of this helps, I would take him to the ER tonight, better safe than sorry. Good luck, hon.

Do not give him a cold bath. Start out with a comfortably warm bath and gradually add cool water every few minutes. Be sure to get areas such as around the neck, armpits and groin area wet to help cool him off. Dress in a t-shirt and underwear and use only a light sheet or blanket to cover him. Alternating the Tylenol and Motrin is a good idea if you can get the meds in him. This is one of the few times when I will bribe my children with chocolate to get them to take their medicine....as the saying goes, "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down." Also, give him Popsicles, jello, clear juices, water and broth, whichever he prefers and as much as he wants. After doing this if you do not notice a drop in temp fairly quickly then take him to the ER and demand that they see him. However if you think it is too serious to try any of these methods first, then by all means take him now!

You are gonna have to pin him down and make him. I know it's heartbreaking but he has to get those meds in him. Motrin tastes better...my kids love taking it. Plus it lasts longer (6-8hrs). If the Motrin doesn't knock that fever down then you can alternate Motrin and Tylenol. It would go something like this:
Motrin every 6-8 hrs, Tylenol every 4 hrs. Make sure you wait around 4 hrs to give the Tylenol after the Motrin. This is safe, but you can call your doc and ask them if it is ok. I wouldn't do it for more than 24 hrs. I would also write down everytime you dose him up.
Give him lots and lots of fluids. Tiny sips. If your gut is telling you something more is wrong other than the flu or something the doc can take care of in the morning, then go to the ER and make them see him.
ADDED: Do not follow the advice of a COLD bath. PLEASE. Just lukewarm. If you search the net you can find out why.

Definitely take ur son to the ER! U r the mother and obviously u r concerned and ur mother intuisions r kicking in so listen to that before u listen to a wack doc. I will also let u know what i do for my three children when they get a really high fever and it works great, u take vinger and u pour it on a rag and rub his whole body with it, especially his whole head ,face, back of his neck and the feet be generous with the vinger, then just put a simple white tee shirt on him with his underwears and a sheet over him do not i repeat do not over dress him. Expect him to scream and cry and fight during the whole vinger process but fight him right back and just do it the vinger will knock the fever out of him he will start to sweat and get cold and shiver but again i remind u do not over dress him. I hope everything works out for you!
P.S. u still should give him motrin it really is soo much better than the tylenol

If his fever is above 102 take him straight to the E.R. If the luke warm bath did not bring his fever down and he wont take his medicine he needs to see a dr. I cant believe they said to wait till in the morning. Take him to the hospital.

take him to the ER some idiot told you to bring him in tomorrow he's sick now not tomorrow try motrin (works better and lasts longer) they sell tylenol suppositiories usually behind the counter in the fridge at the pharmacy. threaten to put the medicine in his botton or he has to drink his meds if that doesn't work force him. this gets to be medical issue not a choice. this could be meningitis (brain infection = brain damage) take him to the ER now!

Take his temp, if it isn't remarkably high, meaning over 101 (I believe this is correct for a 5 year old) then do nothing a fever is a bodies natural reaction to infections, otherwise take him to the ER or clinic.
