wouldnt it be another exception to the
i before e , except after c?

what about Theist?
it doesnt sound like the "a" sound..
and it doesnt follow the i before e rule

wEIrd, isn't it? Actually no. This rule should never be taught, there are far too many words that do not fit it

In this word, the e and the i each make their own sound; they do not combine into one sound. The "i before e" rule is for words in which the two letters make a combined sound.

Think about all the other words that follow this rule...T H E I S T for example. Weigh, sleigh, neighbor...etc.
