according to Cat Paws, cat flu comes from either of two viruses: feline herpes virus (FHV-1) and feline calicivirus (FCV). A cat can get infected by another cat who is a "carrier" of the virus either by being exposed to the carrier's sneeze, cough, or saliva from a food or water bowl, etc. The flu virus itself does not live long in the environment. FHV-1 lives only 48 hrs in the environemnt while the FCB lives 7 - 10 days. 80% of cats that become infected later become "carriers" and can infect only when they are "shedding" the virus. FCV carriers are conituously shedding and are constantly infectious to other cats.
There is a vaccine to protect from cat flu.
If your kitty is an indoor-only kitty and is the only pet in the house, chances are he'll not get the at flu unless he already caught the virue from a cattery or shleter or some other multi-cat place.

Exposure to virus (for flu) or bacteria (for a cold). The cat is much more likely to catch something like this if it is not vaccinated regularly. Viral strains constantly change, so it is possible for a cat to a cold/ flu even if it has been vaccinated, but the syptoms will be shorter lasting and less severe. Respiritory infections can come across as the flu; so can severe hair balls. They can pick up the bacteria and virus pretty much anywhere, including contact with other exposed animals, outdoors, and in the air.

I got diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about 3 yrs ago, whilst I was still attending college and had a foolish one-night stand. I realize a lot of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and suddenly it seemed like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date other men again. After all, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/e4uaW everything changed.
Not only was I able to eliminate all remnants of the hsv from my body in less than three weeks, but I was also able to start dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everyone in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!! This system provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love again. Now I hope that I can help others by sharing this story.

As with humans, you need the germ to catch the flu. Cats that are older or have other medical problems are more likely to catch the flu than young healthy animals.

Usually from another cat that has it. It's highly contagious. Cat flu is usually more serious then the human flu though.
