A careers counsellor could be really helpful. Also, if you're looking for an office role you should brush up on your computer skills and maybe take a short course in new programs.
There are heaps of great books giving advice on the subject as well, like 'What colour is your parachute'.
If you have any friends with a business, you could ask them to give you some part time work so that you have something recent on your resume. Also, get friends to help you revise your resume so it looks up to scratch.
Practise interviewing skills and preparing responses for why you've been out of work.
Also -I've worked in non profit organisations and they are very committed to people who have been out of the workplace for a while. It's a nice gentle environment to reintroduce you to the workplace.
