It happens at naps and at bed time. It is almost everytime. He doesn't have a cold and it doesn't last very long, but it's weird. His dad seems to think he has ashma, but he doesn't cough during the day and has no other symptoms. He just coughs about 6 or 7 times and thats all. Then he goes to bed. I will address it with the doctor on his next check up but what do you think?

At that age, he could just be coughing to see of you'll come back but before you write it off as that you should check some other things first. Wash his bedding in the washer with a cup of vinegar instead of any detergent and skip the dryer sheets too. See if it changes. Then vacuum his mattress and put his pillow in the freezer (or outside in a dry place) for at least three hours. Then put it in a garbage bag and hold the garbage bag tight around the hose of your vacuum cleaner. Suck until the bag looks really flat. Then open the bag and it will be back to normal in a few seconds. Do this with all of his stuffe animals too. See if the coughing changes. Make sure that he does not have anything to eat or drink 30-45 minutes before bed (this will eliminate any acid reflux or heartburn). See if it changes. Keep a list of each thing you try and whether it worked. This will help your doctor. If none of these things work, check to make sure that the bedding and stuffed toys are not stuffed with down or feathers, my mom is allergic to them and has breathing difficulties if she is around them.
One of the ways to see if he is coughing to keep himself awake or get you to come back in his room is to sleep with him or have him sleep with you one nap time. Then you can see if it is happening and why. Is it when he lays down, is it when you leave, etc. This too will help the doctor. If he doesn't cough with you in his room then you know that he is just faking it and he will probably outgrow it.
If this has been going on for awhile, he may have a little chest congestion or a small infection in the little tubes that carry air in the lungs (bronchioles). This is called bronchiolitis. The symptoms are usually a long term cough that is worse in cold air and when lying down. This is usually no big deal and frequently happens when a cold moves into the chest. Though many times patients don't notice the cough for several weeks or even months after the cold.
I hope this helps somehow.

My son who is 13 months has the same exact problem. Only my son had RSV when he was a couple months old. My doctor told me that this could either be that the air is dry since it is winter and to try a humidifier. It could also be asthma but I would get your child looked at just to be sure and on the safe side.

Good Luck!!

It could be medical, such as dust or dry air. But could it be that he gets some added attention when he coughs. Do you pick him up or comfort him when he coughs? He might just want that last reassurance that you're there.

Check with the doctor to make sure he doesn't have sleep apnea, its were he doesn't get enough oxygen when he sleeps. Be careful because if it is the case its the number one cause of SIDS and those results are scary

Keep a HEPA air purifier near his breath, and maintain optimal temperature 70-75F and humidity. Good luck.

Is he sleeping on a down or feather pillow? Could be allergic to that. My parents discovered I was allergic to down at an early age.

It sounds like he might be allergic to something in his bedroom.Does he have stuffed animals in his room or something in his room stuffed with feathers? My daughter use to do that & it ended up she was allergic to her feather pillow. Good Luck!
